Social operating system can be defined as a platform for online interactions, where the base of the network is around people, rather than around content. It provides systematic management and facilitation of human social relationships and interactions. In recent years, the world has observed a number of new social networking sites beginning to conquer the world and hearts of the people with their features. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, MySpace and many more sites have now become the daily routine for millions of people.
Today, Social networking has encouraged new ways to communicate and share information with in users circle. Also, the emergence of anytime, anywhere access has led to the growth of social computing and social networking over the world. However, various social networking sites are focusing more on becoming the social operating system of the Web.
Now the question is which Operating system satisfies your social needs?
For social networking and other media tools, the two most widely used desktop/laptop operating systems are Windows and Mac OS X. While, Windows rule the world with more than 90% market share, Mac OS X is Apple’s graceful and refined OS that is adored by virtually everyone who has tried it. But, various versions of Windows rule each and every segment of the world, whether homes or enterprise user base. However, Windows have not achieved able to carve its space into this arena, as per the critics.
Mac OS X
Apple’s Mac OS X Leopard is wonderful to work with, but it is not happening in the social networking arena. No doubt, Mac OS X may have a dedicated group of followers and an impressive press dominance, which defers the actual reality, but in the social media sphere Apple Inc. lags.
According to sources, the two giants have been putting their respective effort in the social media, however the output is different when compared as per customer outreach. For example, on a Facebook page for Apple’s Mac OS X Leopard has more than thirteen thousand fans as compared to more than one lac fans of Microsoft’s Windows page. While, Mac users can post pictures, company’s stand and mission, the Windows’ users can add lots of discussions, links, special features, videos and various offers.
Besides Facebook, Microsoft also has a strong presence on Twitter, MySpace and other social networks. According to latest figures, the @mswindows Twitter account has more than fifty thousand users and more than two thousand tweets. Apple has an edge over entertainment and music but, lacks the corporate presence on MySpace where the enthusiastic Windows product page leverages the social network’s affinity for music.
In the light of performance or functionality, Apple outperforms Microsoft, but in the social networking array, Microsoft outshines Apple. Various analysts suggest that the reason for the Apple’s position is its policy of not updating the marketing and customer outreach, besides being secretive.
