They are two main types of security cameras systems,- network cameras and analog camera(IP). Below is a very basic explanation of how the two types of cameras work.
Analog surveillance systems.
Majority of security cameras on the market today are mostly standard analog security cameras that are connected directly to a DVR (digital video recorder). In this case, the camera consists of a digital signal processing chip, a housing and a lens. These cameras are simply the window that is used by the digital video recorder to see. The Digital video recorder is connected to the camera through transmission cables. The cameras are connected to the DVR using transmission cables. Transmission cables are usually different but they will all have a connection to the digital video recorder. In this types of security cameras, the digital video recorder is the heart of the system.
IP Surveillance systems.
Network security camera systems are totally different from analog systems because each and every camera does the job that should be done by the digital video recorder. What this means is that a network camera is a standard security camera that can compress the video footage, then convert the video to a digital format and finally stream it over ethernet. In this case, each camera is in a way its own Digital Video Recorder. Most network security cameras also have an SD card so that they can be able to store the video footage directly onto the SD card.
